Great news Pup Parade is back in this years Beano annual (dated 2015) drawn by Steve! Pup Parade has a long history at the Beano, it first appeared in 1967 drawn by Gordon Bell, who sadly passed away earlier this year, Gordon was one of Steve’s favourite artists so it is a real privilege for him to be drawing Pup Parade. Everyone knows that dogs are often great companions and the bash street kids are fortunate to each have one of the pups from pup parade, take a look and see if you can guess who belongs to who!
They say that dogs often resemble their owners and it’s no different for the bash street kids. Like Danny, Bones is the leader of the gang, Sniffy like Smiffy is a bit thick, Tubby likes his food like Fatty, Enry is short sighted like Erbert, Peeps and Wiggy are twin siblings like Toots and Sid.
They certainly get up to lots of antics with many of the early strips showing the pups trying to steal food from their local butcher, trying to avoid the dog catcher and handling disputes with the alley cats. This all takes place in the streets and alleys as they make their home in a knocked over dustbin!
Dogs proved very popular in the Beano with Dennis getting Gnasher in 1968, at the end of Gnashers first appearance dad sent gnasher to the pup parade where he appeared the following week!
Gordon Bells other comic work also includes Spoofer McGraw in Sparky, the Wolf Pack in Whoopee, Pearl for the Topper and the Wabits for the Beezer among many others.
